Bike racing is dangerous enough without "official" obstacles.

Irish cyclist Matt Brammeier had a horrific crash while he tried to rejoin the peloton during the Tour of Utah. Obviously, Brammeier was coming down the hill at Guardsman’s Pass in Big Cottonwood Canyon far too fast to make the turn, and went straight into a team car at a speed I don’t even want to guess.

According to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :

Brammeier was immediately taken to hospital following the incident and was diagnosed with injuries to his pelvis, ribs and lung. “Thankfully, Matt has suffered no head, neck or spinal injuries and is currently stable in hospital. His musculoskeletal injuries are significant however,” team doctor Jarrad van Zuydam explained in a press release issued by the team. “He suffered rib fractures on both sides as well as a small pneumothorax. He also has fractures of the sacral and pelvic bones. Matt is unlikely to require surgery but will need some time to recover from his injuries.”

While it’s good that he is going to recover, the situation was made worse by the bonheadedness of two motorcycle escort vehicles who made an already chaotic situation go from challenging to highly dangerous.

At about 0:33, two motorbikes come tootling down the hill. One stops on the inside shoulder, while the other continues at parade pace around the inside of the turn and collects two additional cyclists.

I hope everyone recovers, and that whoever was on those motorcycles gets an ass-kicking.

I know this corner well, he was going way WAY too fast for that corner and had no hope of making it. That having been said, that was some beef headed riding by the escort bikes.

he was either run into the crowds or woods or side of the cars. Over shoot the corner, just too fast

Well, those two motomen are officials, and I hope they are permanently removed from their position, and I seriously fucking think there should be zones where team cars should be situated in the very back of the pack to avoid conflict. This is sooooo avoidable. (Full disclosure, I raced bikes for a bit)

Had he not hit the car, he would’ve gone flying straight off the mountain...

Right? Lol I wouldnt have even been mad at the Panny, Looks like he was trying desperately to slow down but the reality is he would have never stopped in time. So the car saved him from continuing into the trees. And Quarter panels are better to hit then trees... cause with nature it can go either pretty good, or really, really, really, bad.

Honestly, It’s a good thing the car was there. Otherwise he would have gone flying into the spectators or an elm tree.

I was shocked the way the cars wandered all over the road on that curve. Seems really weird there wouldn’t be a protocol for that (like, cars stay on outside lane on curves) so that the cyclists can predict what they are going to do.

As for the motorcyclists. Pure asshat. Especially the first one who parked his fat ass dead in the left lane and forced those two cyclists into a bad decision.

And plus all of them follow a racing line. Like in autocross or a track. Disruptions on this course forced them to abandon that and have no choice but crash.
